In a powerful demonstration of commitment to justice and community building, The Hear Foundation proudly supported five students from Pittsburgh Public Schools as they attended the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) Conference in New Orleans. This sold-out event, renowned for bringing together law enforcement professionals and community advocates from across the nation, provided an unparalleled opportunity for these young leaders to immerse themselves in critical discussions on public service and community relations.
The students’ journey to the NOBLE Conference was made possible through private donations and The Hear Foundation’s “Bridging the Badge” impact grant, a cornerstone of our broader mission to foster strong, lasting relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The funding, bolstered by an online birthday fundraiser initiated by co-founder Leon Ford, raised $7,000, covering all travel, accommodation, and associated expenses for the students. Each participant was selected not only for their academic achievements but also for their compelling essays detailing how this experience would shape their personal and professional growth.
“This conference isn’t just an event; it’s an opportunity for our students to see firsthand how the values of justice and community engagement are being discussed and applied nationwide,” said Leon Ford, co-founder of The Hear Foundation. “We believe that by empowering our youth to engage with leaders in law enforcement, we are planting the seeds for a future where equity and trust are at the forefront of community-police relations.”
During the conference, the students participated in a series of workshops, panels, and networking sessions, delving into topics like community policing, fairness in the justice system, and innovative approaches to public safety. The experience was more than just educational; it was transformative. These young scholars now carry with them the knowledge and inspiration to become catalysts for positive change in Pittsburgh, equipped to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue between police and residents.
“Our goal is to build bridges of understanding and trust between our communities and those who serve to protect them,” said Cindy Haines, President & CEO of The Hear Foundation. “By supporting these students, we are investing in leaders who will help shape a safer, more just Pittsburgh. The insights and experiences they gain here will ripple through our neighborhoods, fostering a new era of collaboration and mutual respect.”
“This opportunity has changed my perspective on what it means to serve a community,” shared one of the student attendees. “I’ve learned so much about the challenges and the possibilities in building stronger, safer neighborhoods. I can’t wait to bring these ideas back home.”
The Hear Foundation’s commitment to sending these students to the NOBLE Conference underscores our mission to create a safe and thriving Pittsburgh. By investing in the next generation of leaders, we are ensuring that the future of our community is bright, inclusive, and just.
